Victorinox’s Alliance

Victorinox’s 2011 Alliance roll out emphasizes fluidity and dynamism

Serious, sober, function-driven design using Swiss-made components and crafted materials of the highest caliber, that what the Victorinox Alliance Line is all about.

alliance chrono

The Alliance line has steadily evolved since its earliest incarnations. This year’s new Alliance rollout emphasizes fluidity and dynamism. The lyre-shaped watch horns are elongated. Dial styles reflect the spare, essentialist design philosophy: lacquered black but not glossy; silver, satin-finished, with a sunray effect subtly catching the light; or slate grey and matte-finished. Brand new is the presence of only three Arabic numerals on the dial face — at three, six and nine o’clock. Elsewhere, raised and sharp-edged markers indicate the hour. The date window is at six on the watch and angled between four and five on the chronograph. Soft leather for the strap or a classic bracelet in three-link steel, with alternating finishes or understated colour variants.

Available with black, charcoal grey and silver dials and  3-row alternating-finish steel bracelet or leather strap in black, charcoal grey and camel, Alliance Line is priced between Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000.

Breguet Novelty

Breguet’s first and only series-made mechanical chronograph with  a frequency of 72,000 vibrations per hour

breguet

Breguet is introducing a contemporary, technically updated reinterpretation of that legendary chronograph supplied to the French Naval air arm, the Type XXII design. Its stainless steel case, 44 mm across, houses a Breguet chronograph movement with silicon escapement and flat balance spring whose frequency has been raised to 72,000 vibrations per hour, endowing the movement with exceptional regulating power, its chronograph seconds hand effecting a complete rotation in 30 seconds. The timepiece’s start function and readout are thus twice as precise. At the heart of this technical exploit is the use of silicon, resulting in more lightweight mobile components and the avoidance of the lubrication problems generated by high frequencies. An extra hand at centre counts the minutes by adding together the 30-second spans.  The minutes graduation in the form of dashes – one red and the other white – situated on the flange, combined with the numbered seconds graduation also appearing in red and white, serves to establish whether the chronograph counter is in its first (red sectors) or second (white sectors) 30-second revolution. The Breguet Type XXII chronograph naturally features a flyback function, allowing the totaliser to be returned to zero and instantly restarted in one and the same operation. Furthermore, the dial includes a second time-zone indicator along with an aperture for a date calendar. A two-position crown resets the second time-zone indicator by moving the hour hand at centre without affecting the minute hand. With the crown in that position, the date calendar obeys the time of the main time-zone displayed at centre. A 24-hour night-and-day indicator at 3 o’clock tells the wearer whether it is daytime or nighttime in the area covered by the second time-zone. At nine o’clock, a subdial showing the running seconds making full rotations in 30 seconds completes this truly exceptional timepiece. The chronograph’s black dial contrasts crisply with the flyback indications in red. The model comes fitted with an integrated veal strap.

Edox Chronorally has the ability to switch between different race timing modes, mechanically, a rarity

edox chronorally

In conjunction with the World Rally Championship, Edox has created an entire collection dedicated to the world’s best rally drivers and their co-drivers. The new Edox Chronorally is a sports timing instrument which can simultaneously measure elapsed time, accumulate stage times, recount/replay, whilst maintaining accurate standard time keeping functions. Essential as any onboard controls, the Chronorally sets the standard for those with a passion for motor sports. This WRC timepiece has umpteen functions, in addition to the standard display; the watch offers stage timing with an accumulated stage time, recount /replay mode, countdown mode and chronograph.  All the functions are accessible by means of push pieces and the crown which with its outside design permits easy access for the gloved hands of a rally driver. The WRC Chronograph also boasts other rally-themed details like a raised caseback which represents a WRC wheel rim and a rubber wristband featuring a car tyre tread pattern. The ability to switch between different race timing modes, mechanically, is definitely rare. This particular version is made for rally racing, but it would definitely be cool to see this type of selector function on chronographs for other sports as well. Price: Rs.1, 22,600.

Breguet’s Marine Chrono

Breguet’s Marine Chrono with Ruby Baguettes is a beauty with brains

breguet marine chrono

The Marine 5829 Haute Joaillerie Chronograph is sure to delight anyone wanting to time sports performances with exceptional brilliance. Adopting the main features of Breguet model 5827, its self-winding mechanical movement is housed in a case entirely set with baguette-cut diamonds. Exactly 186 precious stones enhance the case bezel, lugs, frame, pushpieces and crown.

The dial’s silvered gold and delicately engine-turned mother-of-pearl form a dazzling composition. The date is shown in a dial aperture at 6 o’clock while baguette-cut sapphires or diamonds enhance the white gold version’s 15-minute sectoral readout and baguette-cut rubies or diamonds on the rose gold one. Wave-patterned engine-turning and blued, facetted Breguet hands complete the dial’s rich visual effects.

Over and above the meticulous workmanship and vast expertise which designs like these call for, the precious stones are selected with extreme rigour. Not only must the gems be internally pure, they also have to match to perfection in terms of colour, size and cut as even minute differences might spoil the design’s overall harmony

Blue Sensation

Grieb & Benzinger’s one of its kind, Blue Sensation

blue sensation

Grieb & Benzinger are at it again. After their Blue Wave 18 carat rose gold monpusher chronograph only watch they now offer another unique timepiece: Blue Sensation regulator chronograph which is Based on an antique Patek Philippe hand-wound movement built for Tiffany, an American jewelry and silverware company founded in 1837.

The movement in question was built in 1889 and powered pocket watches that were sold through Tiffany & Co. boutiques in 1890. Of course, by the time it was chosen to power a new masterpiece from German watchmakers, the movement needed serious cleaning and restoration. Then more restoration, skeletonization, engraving and guilloche, all done by hand with countless disassembling, reassembling, adjustments and more disassembling.

In total the movement was reassembled more than 20 times to ensure that the device works as it should after all the necessary modifications to convert the original movement into a skeletonized regulator chronograph watch. The result, as usual, is stunning.

Screws are blued, wheels are engraved, bridges and plates are engine-turned. The skeletonized dial features their signature Breguet frosted finish and the baseplate is coated with platinum, which makes the watch look even more magnificent.

The dial now features three overlapping subdials: a small seconds display at 9 o’clock, minute counter right in the center and the hours subdial with bold Roman numerals on it is transferred to the 3 o’clock position.

Of course, there are two central second hands (one blued and one in rose gold) because this is a split-seconds chronograph. The 49 mm round case is made of platinum. In fact, there is so much platinum here that it tips the scales at around 165 gms! And the price is  €197,500!
