Balance spring is the most responsive in terms of improvements to timekeeping precision and its performance crucial to the workings of mechanical watch movement. One of a series of vital parts at the heart of the movement, its regular oscillations gives the movement its rhythm and helps regulate the flow of time.

Anthony Louis Breguet conceived the “Breguet overcoil” spring in the year 1795. Two hundred years later it still is the reference in terms of balance spring. A.-L. Breguet got the idea of altering the balance spring’s terminal curve by raising its end and bending it slightly as a way of improving its isochronism. Another Breguet, Louis-Clement, in 1830 sought to prevail over magnetic fields by crafting balance springs in glass instead of metal. Breguet himself had made balance springs in gold to counter oxidation. One such cylindrical spring was fitted in the celebrated Marie-Antoinette watch; its shape was designed to improve considerably its isochronism by repoising its centre of gravity.

Over the years and so much progress in the art and science of horology watchmakers still cribbed about precision. But with arrival of silicon balance spring, courtesy Breguet in its Breguet Tradition 7047 model launched at Basel World 2010.

The balance spring is a very fine coil spring. Usually made of metal, it is vulnerable to shocks, magnetic fields and even the pull of gravity, which can cause warping.

Today, the new Breguet silicon balance spring is featured in the Breguet Tradition 7047 model with tourbillon and fusee-and-chain transmission. Inspired by the design of the first tourbillon-equipped pocket watches devised by Breguet, a platinum version is now available fitted with a movement fashioned in an anthracite-toned metal alloy.

What are the advantages of  a silicon balance spring?

  • Technologically superior
  • Needs less oil
  • Is more precise
  • Totally impervious to magnetic fields
  • Yields to a broad variety of shapes
  • Is lighter than metal and thus less prone to deformation
  • As components fashioned from silicon are subjected to a special process it greatly improves their resistance to handling and shocks

Carl F. Bucherer at BaselWorld2010

March 12, 2010

Briefly: Carl F. Bucherer to unveil Patravi EvoTec Power Reserve and Patravi EvoTec BigDate  at Basel World 2010

Patravi EvoTec Power Reserve

power reserve

Carl F. Bucherer to introduce two new watch models at Basel World 2010 both based on the brand’s visionary EvoTec Manufacture Concept. One of them is the Patravi EvoTec PowerReserve.  Here the innovative power reserve indication is new, along with the big date and day of the week indication and the small second’s hand. Initial results of this completely new approach are the CFB A1000 Manufacture movement and the mechanism that controls the Patravi EvoTec DayDate’s calendar displays.

To change the big date, the Carl F. Bucherer design engineers incorporated a moveable finger on the date-change ring, which makes it possible, when changing the date from the 31st to the 1st of the following month, to change only the disk with the second digit while that controlling the first digit stays still.

The watch features both the Manufacture caliber and this mechanism, and Carl F. Bucherer rounds these off with a new type of power reserve indication. A small red hand sits on the rack that is powered by means of a differential mechanism. It traces a gentle curve beneath an opening in the dial between the 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock index marks. When the watch is wound up, the hand moves across the scale, designed like the stage of an amphitheater, towards “High”, and as the watch winds down, it moves back towards “Low”. To indicate more clearly the power remaining in the barrel, the rack is coated in white, while the underlying surface is in a Carl F. Bucherer red that contrasts perfectly. As the power reserve runs down, the rack with its hand moves down and the area of visible red surface increases correspondingly. It is therefore immediately clear when the watch has little power left in the power reserve. The deliberately understated, modern design concept of the Patravi EvoTec PowerReserve is emphasized through the geometric index marks that echo the gently curved shaping of the case sides.

The characteristic feature of the CFB A1000 Manufacture caliber is the peripherally mounted and bidirectional winding oscillating weight, which supplies the gear with power. Carl F. Bucherer was able to realize this construction as a result of mounting the rotor on DLC-coated rollers (“Diamond Like Carbon”).

The dynamic shock absorption mechanism of this watch is patented under the name “Dynamic Shock Absorption” (DSA). In the event of a sharp impact, the walls of the bridge reduce the radial displacement of the oscillating weight. Another feature, the patented “Central Dual Adjusting System” (CDAS) is an intelligent precision adjustment method with a central control element. The balance and escapement require adjustment only once, and thereafter remain secured in position. This provides effective protection against shocks.

Patravi EvoTec BigDate

big date

With the Patravi EvoTec BigDate, Carl F. Bucherer presents the first ladies’ watch based on the visionary EvoTec Manufacture Concept. BigDate shares several features with PowerReserve. There are identifying features too like its size: 39.2 mm x 38.5 mm and its caliber CFBA  1003. In two of the four versions so far available, the bezel is fitted with 56 of the purest diamonds, emphasizing the character of this watch as a modern piece of jewelry. With the jewels becoming finer towards the corners and their slightly convex shape, this setting perfectly emphasizes the elegant shape of the case.

The silver dial of the Patravi EvoTec BigDate presents an elegantly sleek look with fine index marks for the hours. The black dial offers an extremely attractive alternative: with fascinating high-quality black mother-of-pearl with its natural play of colors at the center, while on the outside there are longitudinal index marks and five diamonds, also set in a dome-shaped framework, indicating the hours.

A striking feature of the Patravi EvoTec BigDate is the date indication in the double window, positioned in the upper left quadrant of the dial, the dimensions of which are unusual even for a big date. The elegant small seconds at 6 o’clock skillfully takes up the shape of the case and is a perfect counterpart to the date.

Naturally not only the front face but also the back of the Patravi EvoTec BigDate has a sapphire crystal, which permits an unimpeded view of the evenly ticking microcosm of the Manufacture movement. This watch is complemented by a strap made of brown python skin, white water-snake skin, black alligator skin or calfskin.

Grande’s Rebirth

February 2, 2010

Grande Chrono

Briefly: de Grisogono’s  Instrumento Grande’s 2010 to be launched at the BaselWorld makes any de Grisogono watch stand out in the crowd.

With its oversized case and calendar aperture plus the galuchat strap that matched the dial’s bright and cheerful colours, the Instrumento Grande from de Grisogono was welcomed with friendly, even enthusiastic applause when launched in 2005.
Now, the same comes in a Chrono version! To be launched at the BaselWorld, the Instrumento Grande’s 2010 dial displays a full measure of the uninhibited creativity that makes any de Grisogono watch stand out in the crowd.
While the watch face’s engine-turned concentric wave pattern and oversized hour markers both recall the original Instrumento Grande, the retrograding date calendar arrayed in twin arcs gives the IGC’s (Instrumento Grande Chrono’s) dial its vibrant personality. The current day’s date stands out bright and clear, outlined by a set of tinted sapphire lenses.
This chronograph’s subdials give classic horological tradition a little jolt. The 30-minute version is white, square and situated at 9 o’clock while the 12-hour subdial is larger, round, black and positioned at 6 o’clock. Together with the black-and-white centre seconds hand, they respond to pushpieces located on either side of the setting crown.
The time of day is shown on an hour circle that is circular enough to boast two right angles – a signature touch from a master of the creative surprise. At 12 o’clock, a discreet subdial for the running seconds adds a more familiar feature. Fashioned in 18 ct pink 5N gold, the IGC is water-resistant to 30 m (~100 ft.). Featuring smoothly rounded bracelet links, its generously proportioned case houses a self-winding mechanical movement that provides 42 hours of reserve power.
Revealing by design, the case allows connoisseurs of mechanical wizardry to observe the movement’s steady beat through a sidelight on the 9-o’clock side of the case. The to-and-fro movement of the rotor, inscribed with the de Grisogono crest, is visible through the clear sapphire porthole of the screw-secured case back – exactly as on the 2005 model, the first watch ever to feature a transparent side panel. Black or brown depending on the dial colour, an alligator strap with pink gold deployment clasp retains the IGC and its unforgettable face securely on the wrist.
